Traveling to another country can be a strenuous process. The last thing you want to worry about is how to keep in touch with those you left back home. Well fret not. Here are a few of your options:
Skype: this is great way to video-call, instant message, and make phone calls. You can download Skype on both your cell phone and computer. Instant messaging and video-calls are free. However, you have to add money to your Skype account in order to make phone calls. Nonetheless, you don’t have to add a lot. With $10 you can easily manage a month or two of phone calls.
Viber: This is a free cell phone app that allows you to make free phone calls and text messages internationally. There are, however, a couple of catches. First, you have to download Viber while in your country of origin. Meaning you can’t download once you’ve arrived in your new country. (Why? Because it needs to send your phone a text message that you won’t be able to receive without acquiring roaming charges.) Second, the person you wish to communicate with must have it installed as well. Other than though, this app works wonderfully and is completely free.
MagicJack: Is another free cell phone app that allows you to make free phone calls no matter where you are. It’s a great way to keep in touch and it doesn’t matter if the person you’re calling has it or not. However, with MagicJack you can create an account that allows you access to other features the app has to offer.
Here are just three applications that can make keeping in touch easier while abroad. So no need to panic or pay ridiculous cell phone company roaming charges, there’s an app for that.
