“Excuses are tools of the incompetent, they build monuments of nothingness…”
Just because you are in a new place doesn’t mean you have to be a new you. If you never drank before, you don’t HAVE to drink just because you’re in a new place and want to fit in. “I’m going to drink because…why not…I’m in Costa Rica!” Unless you’ve always wanted to be that other person, you’re going to end up ruining your experience and just being bored.
Everyone is going to go partying? Don’t feel obligated that you have to go. If you’re living with that mindset anyway, you’re already setting yourself to be miserable. “I’m partying every night because…why not…I’m in Costa Rica!”
Oh yeah…and relationships back home. I don’t mean your family or close friends. I’m talking about boyfriends and girlfriends. Be faithful! Sure it’s hard but think about it this way, while you’re miles and miles and miles away, you don’t want to find out that your significant other cheated on you, so don’t do it to them. “Well, they are cute, and hey…why not…I’m in Costa Rica!”
You don’t have to impress anyone. Being yourself is a natural way to attract people. I mean, hey, it’s the easiest thing to do too, rather than being someone new….that rhymed. Join some clubs your study abroad school may have available. Do things you like and you’ll find there are like-minded people and new friends everywhere doing the same things you’re trying to do. Fit in.
I know I’m goning to squeeze every last morsel of fun out of my experience. I’m not going to want to leave and I see that it’s really evident already. But while I’m here, I’m going to enjoy it my way and not anyone else’s. I mean hey why not…I’m in Costa Rica!
